Jim Nyby embarked on his musical path at a young age, just messing around on the living room piano, and eventually working out favorite tunes with his older brother Mike. His mother was from the Deep South and had a strong love for a wide variety of music, a love which she passed on to all the kids. Jim married his wife Kellie in 1987 and they moved from Los Angeles to Port Townsend in 1990.

Once here in this area’s music community, Jim began attending and gradually participating in open mics at various local venues. He became involved with several bands before forming The Chanterelles, a dance band that played for several years around town. He also kept a steady Sunday night gig, playing solo or sometimes with his son, Nik, at the Ajax Cafe in Hadlock, for over 10 years.

The F Street Band was formed in 2005 when, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, it was decided to form a band paying tribute to the music of New Orleans. Their first performance was a benefit at The Upstage in Port Townsend, and they earned a modest sum to send to the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund to help support those displaced by the storm. The band focuses on covering early rock ‘n roll and blues that originates from New Orleans, with some other influences (Tom Waits, Van Morrison, Dylan, etc.) thrown in.

This concert, and an appearance at Pourhouse on June 17, 2022, will mark the band’s first public performances since October 2019.

F Street Band members include:
– Jim Nyby (piano and vocals);
– Kurt Munnich (drums);
– Bruce Cannavaro (bass) and
– Daniel Neville (baritone saxophone);

along with perhaps a special guest or two.
