An Evening with Jim Nyby: Vocals and Piano April 29, 2021 – 7:00 PM

Half of the donations received from Jim Nyby’s concert will be donated to Jumping Mouse Children’s Center, a group that helps children heal through expressive mental health therapy. More information can be found at: jumpingmouse.org. Nyby is one of Port Townsend’s mainstays of music, having performed in this area for the past twenty-five years. He will be accompanying himself on the Petrof grand piano. The program will include a wide variety of selections spanning several genres, from English folk to New Orleans R&B. Nyby began his interest in music like many musically inclined individuals – just “plunking around” on the family piano as early as he can remember. His mother was from the South and, though not a musician, had a deep passion for music. His early fondness for all kinds of music was influenced by his family’s musical tastes, going through the various record collections, and also of course listening to popular music on the radio. According to Nyby “I don’t compose songs myself, though I have tried. I’m just too distracted by the rich catalog of songs that are already out there. So I’m basically a folk musician, borrowing other people’s stuff. Nothing’s more rewarding than rediscovering an old forgotten song and attempting to breathe new life into it.” After moving from the Los Angeles area thirty years ago, Nyby began attending, and participating in open mic opportunities around town, singing and playing piano and gradually acquainting himself with public performance. In 2000 he began playing at the Ajax Café, where he played Sunday nights for several years. He’s played in several bands here in town, and currently plays with his own group, The F Street Band, which formed in 2005. He also plays saxophone with The Unexpected Brass Band. Nyby says “It is a great honor to be asked to perform again at Trinity’s Candlelight Concert. It’s been a strange year for everyone. Being deprived of live shows of any kind, I discovered that much of my creative energy is derived from audience reaction. I had hopes to work on things at home but the inspiration just wasn’t there. There was a lot of negativity to process, I guess. And so I’m particularly grateful to have this opportunity to focus on something, and present a program of songs…including a few that have resonated with me more recently.”
