Jim Nyby is one of Port Townsend’s mainstays of music, having performed in this area for the past twenty-five years. The evening’s performance will highlight Jim Nyby on the Czechoslovakian Petrof Grand Piano, joined by his wife Kellie Nyby on vocals, and special guest Baila Dworsky on vocals and guitar. The program will include a selection of blues, ballads, folk and gospel songs.
Nyby began his musical career like many musically inclined individuals – just plunking around on the family piano at a young age. His mother was from Mississippi and, though not a musician herself, had a deep passion for music that she had grown up with, and shared it with her children. Jim’s early fondness for all kinds of music was influenced by his family’s musical tastes, and of course, like many, exposure to the rich variety of popular music that was to be heard on the radio in the 1960’s.
Nyby says, “I have a very early memory of my brother Mike playing piano in the living room for my Dad one night. He mostly plays guitar, but on this occasion, Mike was picking out Tennessee Waltz on the piano, one of Dad’s favorites. I remember the emotion in that room, the satisfaction and the mystery that the simple chord progression of the song created. I think at that moment, subconsciously I knew I wanted to be part of that”
After moving from the Los Angeles area thirty-four years ago, Nyby and family met friends with a shared interest in music. He began attending and gradually participating in open mic situations around town. In 2000 he began playing atthe Ajax Café, a weekly Sunday night gig that lasted over twelve years and at which he was sometimes joined by his son Nik on acoustic bass. He’s played in several bands here in town, including Joel Levy’s beloved jazz group Café Combo, which helped introduce him to many jazz standards.
In addition to the New Orleans flavored F Street Band, Nyby is currently playing with Andy Koch’s Badd Dog Blues Society, Sagebrush Honky Tonk Band, and also plays sax with The Unexpected Brass Band.
Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 609 Taylor Street, across from the Community Center, in Uptown. Attendees should plan on arriving early – doors will open at 6:30. Masks are encouraged for in-person attendees.
