Trinity United Methodist’s Candlelight Concerts hosts David Michael a Celtic harpist who will be performing at Trinity United Methodist Church on Thursday, April 28, at 7:00 PM for one set with no intermission. He will be joined for most of the concert by Gwen Franz on cello. The program will include selections from his newly released Skyburst album, copies of which be available at the concert.
The performance will also be streamed live at https://trinityumcpt.org/ where you will find a link for the Candlelight Concerts Online and ways to donate. The concert will also be simulcast on KPTZ FM 91.9.Admission is free, with a suggested donation $10 per person. Half of the proceeds from this concert will go to David Michael’s chosen charity, Jefferson County Foodbank Association at http://jeffersoncountyfoodbanks.org/index.html/.
Trinity United Methodist Church is located at 609 Taylor Street, across from the Community Center, in Uptown. Attendees should plan on arriving early – doors will open at 6:30.
Celtic harpist David Michael is an international performer, recording artist, composer, producer, author and multi-instrumentalist. A pioneer of World Fusion music and teacher of free-form improvisation, he seeks the common ground between many genres and has performed and recorded with master ethnic musicians and members of major symphonies. His music has been featured on syndicated radio shows, cable & network television, documentaries and in nature films.

Since 1990 David has resided in Port Townsend where he operates his independent recording label Purnima Productions. To date he has produced 26 CDs of original music as a solo artist and in collaboration with many other artists such as Nancy Rumbel, Benjy Wertheimer, Steve Gorn, Jami Sieber, Michael Mandrell, the late Randy Mead and Gwen Franz (who will join David for a portion of this concert on cello and viola).
David grew up in Seattle and has been playing stringed instruments most of his life. He studied cello and piano as a child, gravitated to guitar as a teenager and went on to become a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He later studied Flamenco guitar, played Lebanese pop tunes on a Greek bouzouki in a belly dance troupe and collaborated with master musicians from India. He took up viola-da-gamba, psalteries, zithers and other harp-like instruments before eventually realizing he’d been “trying to make a guitar sound like a harp” for years. In 1983 he discovered his forte, the Celtic harp, which most of his original compositions since then are based upon.
He became somewhat of an institution for his impromptu harp concerts aboard Washington State Ferries. He played regularly on the Whidbey Island/Port Townsend run for 17 years until “homeland security” concerns capsized his busking stint there in 2007 to the dismay of his many fans and his saga touched off an international media storm. He has also toured Europe, performing in castles, cultural centers and as a busker in the walking streets of Scandinavia. His travelogue is documented in his book: Busker – Tales of a Renegade Harpist.
Gwen Franz moved to Port Townsend from Bainbridge in 2017 after completing her doctorate in viola performance at UW. She has performed as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the Northwest, United States, and Chile, playing in both classical and non-classical styles. As an orchestral musician, she has performed with the Seattle Symphony, and was a member of the Northwest Sinfonietta, Grand Rapids Symphony, Lansing Symphony, and Evansville Philharmonic. Gwen teaches violin, viola, and cello in her private studio.
